- When the interview gives you the opportunity to ask questions, make sure that you do. This is not only so that you can gain some useful information but it demonstrates that you are interested in the job. It is never a good idea to leave an interview without asking some questions.

Even though you will see that there are thousands of jobs advertised online and in job centres, you will have a better chance of getting a job through word of mouth. By keeping an ear to the ground, you can find out about jobs that are about to advertised before they actually are advertised.

Hearing about roles through the grapevine has other benefits too. If you know about a job that is coming up in a company that you might like to work for then you may be able to get someone who already works there to recommend you for the post. Otherwise how else would you have known about it?

If employees can recommend someone for a job then they may be offered a reward by the employer. By recruiting this way companies can also be fairly sure that the people they are recruiting are coming by way of a recommendation.

But at the end of the day you do need to put things in perspective because the person giving the recommendation may not be the most reliable person working for the company; of course, this is something that needs to be taken into consideration. In that situation you would be better off declining any offer of recommendation that may be purely motivated by an incentive.
